In the continuation of a trend that is sure to rankle Chinas film authorities, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales took the top spot at the mainland Chinese box office this past weekend with a $67.8 million 3-day opening frame. That 3-day China total beat the $62 million Friday-Sunday North American cume that the Johnny Depp starrer earned over the first three days of its 4-day, $77 million Memorial Day debut. Although the domestic opening for the $230 million budgeted action-adventure franchise fell short of expectations, it's really the overseas markets that matter for Disney at this point, and on that score China carried the day in leading a solid $208 million international opening for the film, the 12th best overseas debut of all-time.
