The ''sea dragon'' belongs to a group that swam the world's oceans 200 million years ago, while dinosaurs walked the land. The specimen is the largest Ichthyosaurus to be described, at more than three metres long. It was discovered on the coast of England more than 20 years ago, but has remained unstudied until now. Palaeontologist Sven Sachs saw the fossil on display at a museum in Hannover. He contacted UK palaeontologist, Dean Lomax, who is an expert on Ichthyosaurs. ''It amazes me that specimens such as this [the biggest] can still be 'rediscovered' in museum collections,'' said the University of Manchester palaeontologist. ''You don't necessarily have to go out in the field to make a new discovery.''
8/17/2017 0 Comments NASA'S VOYAGER MISSIONS ARE EQUIPPED WITH MAPS THAT COULD LEAD EXTRATERRESTRIAL LIFE TO EARTHThe 40th anniversary of the launch of two of NASAs most remarkable spacecraft is fast approaching. The Voyager 2 mission launched into space on August 20, 1977, followed by Voyager 1 on September 5, 1977. And since their departure from Earth, bothspacecrafthave accumulated various accolades. The puzzle of a 'Frankenstein dinosaur' whose skeleton appeared to be a muddle of unrelated species has been solved by a Cambridge scientist. The new study, written by Matthew Baron, a PhD student at Cambridge University, suggests that the Frankenstein is the missing link between plant-eating dinosaurs such as Stegosaurus, and carnivorous dinosaurs, like T-Rex. This latest development has given a fresh insight on the evolution of a group of dinosaurs known as the ornithischians - which included Triceratops and Stegosaurus. Mr Baron said the Frankenstein dinosaur was the very first of this group. A six hour-long spacewalk will take place on the International Space Station (ISS) today and NASA will be livestreaming the whole event. Russian cosmonauts Fyodor Yurchikhin and Sergey Ryazanskiy will be going outside of the space station to launch several nanosatellites, perform structural maintenance and collect research samples. The event will start at 10am ET, with commander Yurchikhin and flight engineer Ryazanskiy exiting through the Pirs airlock at about 10.45am. Scientists say the contaminants take a circuitous route travelling via the Arctic Ocean and down past Greenland. Researchers believe the radioactivity levels are extremely low and present no danger. However, scientists can use the iodine to accurately map the currents that transport greenhouse gases. The surprising answer is from the chemistry of a single tail feather. Incredibly, specific compounds in penguin feather proteins allow scientists to track the birds migration over many hundreds of kilometres. The plumage records a kind of "chemical passport" stamped with a signature of the locations visited. Dr Michael Polito, of Louisiana State University, US, told BBC News: "You can say: 'penguins are where they eat,' because a geochemical signature of their wintering area is imprinted into their feathers." Two species of penguin - Chinstraps and Adlies - are the focus of the study
Air monitors in Switzerland have detected large quantities of one gas coming from a location in Italy. However, the Italian submission to the UN records just a tiny amount of the substance being emitted. Levels of some emissions from India and China are so uncertain that experts say their records are plus or minus 100%. These flaws posed a bigger threat to the Paris climate agreement than US President Donald Trump's intention to withdraw, researchers told BBC Radio 4's Counting Carbon programme.

Company documents and video episodes of other HBO shows were also shared. The hackers claim to have 1.5TB of data in total, but HBO has said it does not believe its email system has been compromised. Documents in the latest leak were marked "HBO is failing", according to the Wired news site, and included legal information, employment agreements and other company files.
